Plucking your eyebrows

  1. When plucking, opt for high quality, sharp slanted tweezers. They will grab stray hairs easier
  2. Ease the pain of plucking by applying Orajel beforehand
  3. Tweeze immediately after a shower. The warm water will open the follicles and make them easier to pull out
  4. Never use a magnifying mirror to pluck – it can lead to over plucking
  5. Create your shape before you start plucking by outlining with a brow pencil
  6. If you have over plucked, wait at least 3 weeks for hairs to grow back in
  7. Plucking is most painful in the days before your period
  8. Clean your tweezers regularly to prevent bacteria buildup
  9. Do your research on which brow shapes match your face the best
  10. Stand back from the mirror to avoid over-plucking
  11. Pluck in the direction of hair growth
  12. Never shave your eyebrows
  13. Hold skin taut while plucking to reduce pain

Waxing your eyebrows

  1. Take a selfie immediately after getting your eyebrows waxed at the salon and refer to it when doing a little eyebrow maintenance at home
  2. If your brows are unruly, trim them before you wax
  3. If waxing your own eyebrows, mark the area with white eyeliner first
  4. Use a numbing cream before you wax to make it less painful
  5. When waxing at the salon, you should never be sitting upright. It can cause wax to fall on your lashes or your eyes. Rather, lay down or angle yourself backwards
  6. When waxing at home, use one hand to hold skin taut and the other to pull the strip
  7. Don’t wear makeup to an eye waxing appointment
  8. Avoid tweezing between waxing appointments
  9. Make sure your hair is long enough before having eyebrows waxed
  10. Never get a wax the same day as an event. Your brows will probably be red for a few hours
  11. Every time you wax hair grows in finer and softer, so waxing gets less painful over time
  12. Waxing lasts longer than tweezing and threading (6 weeks)
  13. Always be explicit in letting your beautician know exactly what you want

Shaving tips

  1. When shaving your legs, never skip shaving cream
  2. Soak your legs in warm water before shaving, it will make the hair plumper
  3. When shaving, use long even strokes and light pressure to avoid nicks
  4. When shaving the knees, bend them slightly and pull the skin tight
  5. Shave in the direction of the hair growth
  6. For a closer shave, shave against the grain of hair growth
  7. To prevent irritation, avoid shaving the same area more than once
  8. Exfoliate your skin before shaving so your razor won’t clog with dead skin cells
  9. Start with a fresh razor every 3 uses
  10. If you don’t have shaving cream, you can replace it with hair conditioner
  11. Or coconut oil
  12. Never slide a blade sideways. It will cause painful cuts
  13. When not using your razor, keep the plastic cover on to keep them free from debris
  14. If you are a female, don’t be afraid of trying shaving products for men!
  15. For less pulling and tugging, opt for a 5 blade razor
  16. Treat after shaving irritation with baby oil, aloe vera, or honey
  17. Opt for razors with moisturizing strips
  18. Soap can dry out your skin – never use it to shave

Waxing tips

  1. Make sure your hair is 1/4 to 1/8 of an inch long before going for a wax
  2. Allow for at least 3 weeks of hair growth before a wax
  3. Exfoliate the skin before waxing
  4. Avoid lotions or deodorants before waxing
  5. Avoid waxing if you are taking antibiotics, Retin-A, or oral acne medications
  6. After waxing, wait at least 24-48 hours before sunbathing or using a tanning bed. Your skin is very sensitive during this time.
  7. If you decide to go the waxing route, give up shaving. Shaving in-between waxes will defeat many of the benefits
  8. If you are doing the waxing yourself, apply some baby powder to the area before waxing it. It will help the strip stick by removing excess moisture
  9. Always test your wax on your wrist before applying it to your skin. If its too cold it won’t spread, and if its too hot it will burn
  10. When waxing at home, always apply wax in the direction of hair growth
  11. To remove pain and stinging, apply pressure to the waxed area immediately after the strip is pulled
  12. Never wax the same area more than twice. If you have excess hairs, use a tweezer to remove them.
  13. If waxing at home, you can use baby oil to remove any excess wax
  14. Avoid waxing in the days before your period when your skin is most sensitive
  15. Avoid hitting the gym after a wax. Sweat increases your risk of spreading bacteria
  16. If you are sensitive to pain, try taking an ibuprofen 30 minutes before a wax
  17. Use moisturizing lotion everyday to protect your skin
  18. Avoid wearing tight clothing to waxing appointments. It can cause irritation
  19. Avoid sources of heat (saunas, hot tubs, baths, etc) for 48 hours following a waxing appointment

Alternative measures

  1. Electrolysis is the only form of permanent hair removal
  2. Hair grows in cycles. Don’t expect full removal during your first electrolysis appointment
  3. Laser hair removal lasts for a few weeks to a few months and can help to reduce hair growth over time
  4. Sugaring is an all natural alternative to waxing
  5. Hair removal creams are a shaving alternative, but can cause chemical burns. They are not recommended for those with sensitive skin
  6. Threading is a less painful alternative to tweezing, but can only cover small areas of hair.
  7. You can use bleaching to reduce the appearance of hairs that you don’t want to remove
  8. Intense Pulsed Light is a long term hair removal option, but is not good for immediate removal
  9. Avoid shaving, waxing, plucking, etc. before going for any alternative form of hair removal. Hair needs to be long enough to grasp onto
  10. Drink plenty of water before hair removal appointments. It helps the hair slide out more easily
  11. Clear skin releases hair more easily. Avoid wearing makeup or creams before hair removal.

Removing underarm hair

  1. If shaving underarm hair, do so at night so you don’t have to put deodorant on afterwards
  2. Use coconut oil to keep your underarms hydrated
  3. Shave underarm hair in all directions to get a smooth shave
  4. Some people pluck their underarm hairs. Avoid doing this if you have thick hair or are prone to ingrown
  5. If waxing your underarms, exfoliate a few days later to prevent ingrown hairs
  6. Hair should be 1/4 of an inch long before re-waxing
  7. If using a hair removal cream, avoid using deodorants for 24 hours afterwards
  8. If using hair removal cream, always test a small spot first to see how skin will react
  9. Combine 1/4 cup turmeric powder with 3tbsp rosewater/milk for an all natural underarm hair removal solution
  10. Another natural solution for underarm hair: 3tbsp honey with 1 tsp lemon juice

Facial hair

  1. Don’t freak out over a little facial hair. Chances are you are the only one who notices it
  2. Never shave facial hair – you are asking for disaster!
  3. If you only have a few stray hairs, stick with tweezing
  4. Waxing is a good way to remove upper lip hairs
  5. For a longer lasting solution, try laser hair removal
  6. If facial hair has grown out of nowhere, see a doctor. It could be hormonal.
  7. If you’re hesitant about removing facial hairs, try bleaching them.

Bikini line

  1. Avoid trying to do your own Brazilian wax. There are some hard to reach places that are better left to the pros
  2. 20 minutes before a Brazilian, apply a skin numbing cream to dull the pain of waxing
  3. If you decide to shave your bikini line, choose a sharp blade for a close shave
  4. Use a transparent shaving gel if shaving the bikini line. This way you can see what you are doing.
  5. Shave in the direction of hair growth to avoid irritation
  6. Apply a toner with witch hazel or rosemary to avoid rash
  7. To banish ingrown hairs, exfoliate regularly
  8. Down a glass of vino before a Brazilian to help you relax
  9. Wear a skirt or loosely fit clothing to a waxing appointment.
