Skin care 101

For many people, skincare can be confusing. After all, there are hundreds (if not thousands) of different skin care products on the market. Cleansers for oily skin, cleansers for dry skin, moisturizers, day creams, night creams, anti-aging creams, pore cleansers, facial peels – this is just a short list of what is really a very long list of facial products that you will find on any pharmacy shelf – no wonder it is so confusing to find the right one! And that’s just the products and creams that you can find in the store! What about the dozens of different facial rejuvenation and treatment options that you can get in the salon – chemical peels, steam facials, laser facials, and so and on so forth? But I’m here to tell you that if you are worrying about all of the details of skincare, then you are worrying too much! Skincare doesn’t need to be so complicated – you’re always just three basic steps away from healthier more vibrant skin!

Step 1: Cleansing

Common sense would tell you that cleansing is an important part of skin care. Just like we need to shower every day to keep our bodies clean, we should wash our face every day to keep it clean. Everyday our skin is exposed to a variety of toxins, dirts, germs, and oils that make our skin dirty and clog our pores. Throw on some makeup for the day and the dirt load is even higher. So, it only makes sense that come night time, we need to remove our makeup and cleanse the toxins and dirt from our face. With that being said, choosing the wrong skin cleanser can actually do more damage than good. If you choose a cleanser that is too harsh, for example, your skin could end up drying out. Avoid things like soap bars and chemical filled cleansers and search for something mild and all natural.

Step 2: Moisturizing

Moisturizing is equally as important as cleansing and can help to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the environment, while at the same time keeping it from drying out. With that being said, contrary to what the big skincare advertisers may have you believe, you don’t need a different moisturizer for every hour of the day – one basic moisturizer applied once or twice a day will do just fine. Search for moisturizers that have ingredients like glycerol, ceramides, hydroxy acids, and niacinamide. If you have skin concerns like dry skin, oily skin, or sensitive skin, it may be best to speak to a dermatologist who can help you find the perfect moisturizer for your skin type.

Step 3: Protect your Skin

Did you know that sun exposure and smoking are two of the top sources that can lead to premature aging? And both are preventable! Our skin is sensitive and we need to nourish it by living a healthy lifestyle. While we can all make the choice to avoid smoking, avoiding the sun isn’t quite as easy – and we don’t want to avoid it! Research has shown that short bursts of sun exposure can provide the body with much needed Vitamin D – but anything more than 15 minutes and the UV rays will cause more damage than good. But while we can’t avoid the sun, we can protect our skin from it. How? Sunscreen! Sunscreen at the beach, sunscreen on the street, sunscreen on rainy days, sunscreen on cloudy days, sunscreen in the summer, and sunscreen in winter! That’s right – even if its not hot, and even if you can’t see it, the sun can age your skin – so lather up!

Sounds easy right? These are the three most basic steps that you need to keep your skin youthful and glowing – and the rest is up to you. If you want to throw in a facial or two – it definitely can’t hurt – but don’t waste your time or your money on products you don’t need just because the advertisement looks good!
